This is a blog post I shared in May. I have added two new 7-line poems for you to enjoy. This is a creative exercise I learned at a recent women’s retreat. It’s called the 7 – line poem and it works like this: start with 2 words such as Winter is  & then use the last word in the sentence as the first word in the next line. These are stream of consciousness, short & sweet. These are from my daily Morning Pages.

1 – Winter is coming

2 – Coming soon

3 – Soon it will be here

4 – Here with all its beauty

5 – Beauty and stillness

6 – Stillness and silence

7 – Silence is golden

Here is another one.

1 – Morning creeps in slowly

2 -Slowly and softly

3 – Softly comes the light

4 – Light of a new day

5 – Day dawns gradually

6 – Gradually day begins

7 – Begins anew

What I like about this simple exercise is that the words flow easily and effortlessly. Sometimes the poems contain a message for me. These little gems are full of wisdom and direction. I pay attention to the messages, I listen and I take them to heart. What is the Universe trying to tell me? What do I need to pay attention to today? Try this simple yet profound exercise, it’s really fun!

Thanks for your comments Deborah. I have thought of putting together a little booklet of my 7-line poems. I agree that stream of consciousness is a really rich vein of gold.

Thanks for your comments Elda. What I like about this simple exercise is that I don’t have to be a poet to write 7-line poems. It’s about the creativity, spontaneous writing and being in the moment. Glad you like the idea!

What a neat idea! I have never considered that I was built of ‘poem writing’ material but I can do this. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love this process. As I was reading I was feeling uplifted in appreciation for winter to come, even if it is cold 🙂

I love this, Nancy! My heart and soul are so poetic that sometimes I feel I’m bubbling over with words, but when I sit to write, I get one ‘epic’ line out and then… Nothing. Onto the next thing. So in those moments, I’ll employ this little happy trick. Thank you so much for the loving sharing!! Autumn is coming to an end… Endless are the beautiful days, Days of our lives… <3

That’s such an interesting process Nancy, and I most certainly think it would be a fun thing to do seasonally (or monthly or weekly) and keep track of them. Love that you’re doing it on your blog. And I like paying attention to messages as well and stream of consciousness is a rich field to dip into.
