What is an attitude adjustment? For me, it is looking at a person or situation from another perspective. It is looking at a situation differently. In coaching lingo, we call this re-framing. How can you look at this through another lens? What is the real issue here? How important is this? This topic came up for me when I walked in nature this morning. I often hear my next blog post topic when I am walking alone. Today I woke up in a less than joyous mood which is unusual for me. Something was bothering me. After writing furiously for 14 minutes in my daily Morning Pages, some clarity emerged.  My Artist’s Way Retreat booklet which is my master copy with all of my notes has gone missing. I brought it to the Monday night Vein of Gold class to share with the women who had not attended the retreat. When I got home that night I realized the booklet was not in my bag. I have emailed everyone in the group asking them to look through their class materials to see if someone inadvertently picked it up. If the book never reappears it is not the end of the world. I have another copy. So needless to say, I was looking at the situation differently this morning and my new perspective has allowed me to let go of getting my retreat booklet back. Many years ago a friend of mine gave me some sage advice, control what you can and let go of the rest. I asked myself in my pages today what can I let go of? What is out of my control? Have I done everything I can to get my booklet back? What else do I need to let go of today?

What about you? Where in your life do you need an attitude adjustment? How can you change your attitude/perspective about a challenge or setback you are currently facing? What is the lesson or silver lining when you make an attitude adjustment? What do you need to let go of today? What do you have control over today? How can you look at this situation or person from another perspective?

I invite you to schedule a complimentary coaching session today. I specialize in attitude adjustments:)

As a recovering ‘control freak’ the last several years have been a huge shift around allowing things to unfold at their own pace. I look at things now as everything happens for a reason, what opportunities are there for me in this experience. It is amazing how much more opens up for me from this pace versus trying to push my way through life. Thank you Nancy for sharing such a powerful message!

Thank you for your comments Amy. I also believe that things happen for a reason. There are lessons and silver linings in everything that happens in my life. Sometimes I have to dig deep to discover what they are but they are there. Acceptance is part of every attitude adjustment for me. Accepting what I can’t control and letting go of expectations.

I find that when I’m in the early stages of cranky if I stop, just STOP and recognize what’s going on then I have a good chance of turning it around, especially if I’m honest with myself. But I have to recognize it first. Acknowledge the emotion and learn from it before letting it go.

Thanks Susan. Sometimes I have to literally say to myself, STOP, do not go down that road, it’s a dead end.

I have recently had to have an attitude adjustment towards myself. After a life time of restrictions due to hip issues, and 10 years in pain, I now have a new hip. This means my restrictions have been lifted, the pain gone, and a new found freedom. For a while the fact that I now have no real limitations was quite overwhelming. I had to readjust my thought process around this so that my overwhelm could change to joy and balance. It took me a while to figure out what the emotions were as they were not feelings I had anticipated. It has been and interesting journey of continuous attitude adjustments.

Thanks Kama. Sounds like you’ve done some attitude adjusting and the benefits are huge for you. Here are a few questions I ask myself and my coaching clients when an attitude adjustment is needed. How can I look at this situation differently? What is the silver lining in this situation if I change my perspective about it? What am I supposed to learn from this situation?

Attitude adjustments are wonderful. Right now, I would like to change my attitude about the upcoming elections. Our local elections have been negative beyond belief. To think that this is who I have to choose from to run my little town, the schools and the county? Somehow, I need to get a better attitude so that I can vote on Tuesday.

And – hope you find your booklet.and am grateful you have another copy.
