rapidsA quote from our late and beloved Maya Angelou goes like this:  “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude about it.”  It’s not so much what happens to us, it’s how we respond to the situation or event. We all encounter obstacles, roadblocks, challenges. We can be like the rapids finding a way around the boulders or we can get hung up on the rocks.  Do you view the world from the glass is half full or the glass is half empty perspective.? It’s all about our attitude. What I have learned is that I have the power to change my attitude about someone or something. I can choose another perspective. I can choose to look at a situation differently. My attitude can set the tone for my day. One of the reasons I value morning pages so much is because they can change my attitude. If I wake up in a grumpy, crabby place, after 3 pages of stream of consciousness writing, my mood has shifted, my attitude has changed. Morning pages help me to detach from my inner critic, the one with the negative voice. There is a shift in attitude from Negative Nelly to Positive Polly. We can’t change other people or situations but we can change our attitude and attitude is everything.

What about you? How is your attitude today? What needs to change in your life? Where in your life could you use an attitude adjustment?

I invite you to schedule a complimentary coaching session with me. I specialize in attitude adjustments:)

Positive Polly! Haven’t heard that before. I’m a positive sort myself. However when I’m wallowing in Negative Nelly land the best thing for me to do is get out and exercise. All the minutiae problems some how get put back into correct perspective. I keep reading about morning pages – have never done them – and am beginning to think maybe I should!

I can’t always change my attitude, but I can usually change my attitude about my attitude. That is, Yes, this obstacle is insurmountable today, but soon I will figure out a way to deal with it, and I just need to hang on until then. Mind, I don’t suffer from clinical depression, which makes it a lot harder to fix your attitude.

I love the reminder of “if you can’t change it, change your attitude about it. So many times we fall victim to thoughts and feelings of not being able to control a situation, when in fact, all we need to do is change our attitude about them. Thank you 🙂

This is so true – if you think you are having a bad day – you will have one. The same can be said of the opposite. I have kind of fallen off doing my morning pages, but you are right – they will shift your attitude immediately upon waking. Thank you for the post

My attitude is fabulous today and I can feel what a shift it provides…that positive feeling/thinking….so much getting done and I’m really enjoying everything I’m doing. Thank you for the reminder of the importance of this small task and what a difference it can make.
