Irish coastThis morning as I was bemoaning the lack of sunshine to my friend Kathleen, she had an interesting response to my complaint. She said “I like this weather, I don’t miss the sun.” And I queried her, “please tell me what you can possibly like about this gloomy, dreary, drizzly weather.” She told me that the overcast weather reminds her of England and Ireland, countries she has visited. I told her I would take that vision with me on my morning walk and I did.

As I walked along the river, I envisioned hiking the rugged coastline of Ireland with stunning vistas and overlooks. Everywhere I looked I saw breathtaking expanses of  lush green hills. From Ireland I traveled to the Cotswolds in England. From the charming villages with the thatched cottages and dusty lanes to the gently rolling hills dotted with sheep, I walked briskly along the footpaths transporting myself to another place and time. By imagining myself in the Irish and English countryside this morning as I walked I was able to change my perspective and my walk turned into an imaginative idyll. Changing our perspective is a choice and I am so glad I decided to look at the weather through another lens today. It made a difference in my attitude and I got some much needed exercise.

What about you? Where in your life do you need to change your perspective? What is available to you when you look at a situation from another viewpoint? What are the benefits when you change your perspective?

“Changing our perspective is a choice” – How true! Thanks for sharing this comment. I like to think of the old saying about how people always seem to think the grass is greener on the other side and then when they get there, they wish they were back where they were! Makes us realize how important to be thankful for whatever this moment brings us. Great post, thanks!

I agree with Alison Dix…..for me it is all about recognizing the many blessing in my life….being grateful for all that I have. That changes the way I see and approach everything!

I think the biggest thing that helps me to change my perspective is gratitude. Whenever I am feeling like “why is this happening to me?” I can change my outlook by thinking about all that I have to be grateful for and suddenly the pity party is over. Gratitude also makes us realize how full and meaningful our lives are which always fills our heart with joy. Such a wonderful way to change our perspective.
