Red flowerI am participating in my second 30 Day Passion Project with the amazing Laura West. Her website is joyfulbusiness.com, check it out! This time for my Passion Project I have chosen to do something creative every day for 30 days. It’s more challenging than I thought it would be. Some days creativity oozes from my pores, but sometimes I really have to stretch into my creativity. In her groundbreaking book The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron states that “creativity is our true nature” and I agree with her 100%. She says “No matter what your age or life path, whether making art is your career or your hobby or your dream, it is not too late or too egotistical or too selfish or too silly to work on your creativity. Many of us wish we were more creative. Many of us sense we are more creative, but unable to effectively tap that creativity. Our lives feel somehow flat. Often, we have great ideas, wonderful dreams, but are unable to actualize them for ourselves. While there is no quick fix for instant, pain-free creativity, creative recovery (or discovery) is a teachable, trackable spiritual process.”

As a life coach I encourage, support and challenge my clients to stretch into their creativity, to think outside the box and to look at situations from a fresh perspective. Creativity is not limited to writers, painters, potters, dancers, musicians, photographers, graphic designers. It is in each and every one of us. Our job is to discover or reconnect to it, however that may look. Joseph Chilton Pearce says “To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” Picasso says “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Stretching into our creativity takes courage, fearlessness and trust. The words of Henry David Thoreau drive home this point. “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.”

What about you? How can you reconnect to your creativity? How are you creative? What is one small step you can take today in service of living a more creative life? Do something creative today! You’ll be glad you did.

I invite you to explore your creativity at the Artist’s Way Retreat, October 19 -21 at the ARC Retreat Center near Cambridge, MN.
