I recently changed my title from Life Transitions Coach to Success Coach and I’ve been thinking about what success means to me. Success for me has to do with feeling passionate about the work I do in the world. It’s about getting up each morning and being excited to go to work. One of the affirmations I use on a daily basis is “I am on my right and perfect path.” That feels like success to me. I want to share a quote with you that I heard in my Creative Business Studio class today. It’s from a book titled The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. “I expand in abundance, success and love every day as I inspire those around me to do the same.” I feel successful when I am helping my clients to achieve success in their lives. There is great joy in seeing a client move forward in her life and claim the success she so richly deserves. There is also a feeling of contentment and all is well when I feel successful. Contentment doesn’t mean that I’m sitting still, far from it. I am taking action steps, marketing my classes and retreats, participating in inspirational teleclasses, blogging and updating and tweaking my website. Here are a few of the markers/signposts of success in my life.

  • returned to teaching The Artist’s Way class in September, 2013
  • launched my first website in February, 2014
  • started blogging, February, 2014
  • facilitated my first retreat in October, 2014
  • hired a graphic designer in November, 2014
  • facilitated my second retreat in February, 2015
  • signed up for one year teleclass called Creative Business Studio in March, 2015
  • facilitated my third retreat in May, 2015
  • joined facebook
  • co-founded women’s networking group in September, 2016
  • attended four day retreat in Virginia Beach, VA, (Creative Business Retreat by the Sea) in October, 2016

The signposts of success are different for each person. Being a visual person, it helps me to see the list above. The real meaning of success for me is knowing that the work I am doing is making a positive difference in the world.

What about you? How do you define success? How do you feel when you are successful? What are the signposts/markers of success for you? Who in your life supports you in being successful? What is one action step you can take today to move closer to being successful? Please share your thoughts on success with me. I would love to hear from you:)

What true success you have had. Congrats! As I mentioned to you when we first met in person, I had thought you had been blogging for years!

For me, success is experiencing a life filled with Passion; the people, the places, the events etc. that fill me with joy.

I LOVE that book you mentioned. For the last couple of years, I have actually repeated that particular affirmation you quoted, EVERY single morning right before I start my meditation. EXCELLENT choice!

I have been thinking about “what is success for me” for the past few months. It’s so easy to define yourself by your failures. I have never once thought of listing my successes. Like most people, I’m pulled in multiple directions. This tends to lead to lists of failures rather than lists of successes. Thanks for the re-direction.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments Hema. Having the freedom to choose what we want to do is definitely a sign of success in my world. Sounds like you are blessed to have an open minded and supportive partner. Knowing that my blog post/s inspire people and make a difference in their lives, that is success. Wishing you continued success in your life Hema:)

    Hello Nancy,

Hearty congratulations to you. That is really inspiring. Thank you for sharing. Well I’ve known real success at the age of 26 when I moved to Australia. Ask why? Well I came from a very conservative and strict family. Always did what my family wanted me to do. That never made me happy. I never really succeeded at any of those things I had done because I did not have any interest. But moving to Australia was a blessing in disguise. Infact that was my first success. I love having the freedom to choose what I want to do.

I am luckily married to a man who encourages me to do that and wants me to be successful and independent. At the moment success to me is making a positive difference in people’s lives. Receiving thanks from a subscriber…that’s success! A facebook inbox message stating that my post helped someone or put a smile on someone’s face….that’s success! I honestly have begun to love my life.

Thank you so much for your motivating post dear Nancy:) Wishing you a wonderful weekend

Nancy- congrats on your accomplishments! We should all celebrate the success we have achieved. I have found as I’ve gotten older that my definition of success has changed. So much less on materiality and much more on personal growth. Thanks for sharing your story.

Life is fun and full of new adventures right now. I totally agree with you Kama about having the freedom to do the things I love to do. I try not to use the should word. England is on my bucket list so maybe we can meet up when I finally get over there:)

Congratulations … Sounds like life is fun for you at the moment. For me success is having the freedom to do the things I want to do, rather than the things I ‘should’ do. Success would mean doing what I love, living in a cottage in the countryside, and spending a few months of the year in France, Spain or Italy + many other places. Ahhh I feel relaxed just thinking about it 🙂

Thanks Deborah! Rather than comparing myself to others, I try to be inspired by what they’ve done. Success is in the eye of the beholder and like you said there are many varieties of fruits and vegetables in the world:)

Congratulations on your successes Nancy, and for claiming a new title that feels like a right-fit for you.

Definitions of success are so personal and varied and that’s how I think it should be. I think there’s lots of unnecessary anguish for some people who try to compare their lives against the successes reported by others. I like to think we’re all different varieties of vegetables and fruit and there’s no point in thinking oranges need to look anything like avocados.

Congrats on your success – I appreciate your list. I, like you, do not define success on material possessions I’ve acquired, or any career ladder that I’ve climbed. I define success by the people I love and befriend, by the ability to work on and share my passion (which is writing, in my case), and on being THERE for friends and family, always.
