lake superior cove ptI have been reflecting lately about what it means to find my voice. Here are a few of the insights which I have gleaned about this topic. I am finding my voice in a way that absolutely amazes me. What I have to say, my mission, my message is important and it is time for me to share this in a bigger way. Thus, my Artist’s Way Retreat in October. It is so important for women to listen to their inner wisdom, their intuition, their spirit. The answers are within us, our job is to listen. Listening can be a challenge when we are plugged in 24/7. We live in a noisy world. Most people are either on their cell phone, laptop, tablet, I-Pad, desk top every day for hours. We are plugged in and connected on a daily basis. For me it so important to take a break from blogging, facebook, email, texting, talking on my cell phone. I do this by walking in nature as often as possible. It is in nature that I truly find my voice. I listen, I pay attention to what my spirit needs and I act on that information. Most of my blog post topics come to me when I am walking alone in nature. I gain clarity, direction, insights, aha’s, answers, solutions and so much more when I am silent. So what does being silent have to do with finding my voice? Sounds like an oxymoron. It’s not. My voice comes to me in my daily Morning Pages, in nature, when I am on a retreat. It is in the silent stillness that I hear my voice. Finding my voice has been a process, an ongoing series of  tuning in, listening and then acting on what I hear. It is empowering, enlightening, exciting and inspiring to not only find my voice but to claim it and honor it.

What about you? Are you interested in finding your voice?  What will it take for you to find and claim your voice? What is the message you will share with the world? What is one small step you can take today to move in the direction of finding your voice?

I invite you to immerse yourself in the silence of the woods and join me for the Artist’s Way Retreat October 19 -21 at the ARC Retreat Center near Cambridge, MN. Reserve your space today!

Hi Gail, thanks for your comments. What will inspire you today? How can you break down whatever is overwhelming you into bite size pieces? What is one small step you can take today to feel less overwhelmed? Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed and sometimes immobilized, I try to chunk it down into small, manageable pieces and that seems to help with the overwhelm. Good Luck!

I agree with you Harmony about Morning Pages. They are valuable in any format. Some of the women in my Artist’s Way class really struggle with them. I always say focus on what you did not on what you did not do. Writing Morning Pages 3 days during the week is better than not writing them at all. Focus on the positives, that’s my motto:)

Thanks for your comments Kelly. I wish you lived in the Twin Cities, then you could attend my Artist’s Way Retreat and get inspired about Morning Pages. They really are worth the time. I like to say they take time and they make time. Glad to hear you’re taking time for yourself out in nature:)

In the ever present ebb and flow of life, I am in a place where I am feeling overwhelmed and uninspired. I know it’s time to stop, slow down, and just be. It always works so why do we resist so? thanks for the reminder.

Yes, yes, yes to the morning pages, even if my own practice is slightly different these days from the one in the book. Morning pages, in any form, are invaluable.

More promotion regarding Morning Pages. I stil haven’t begun to do them even though I’ve said more often than not that I’m going to. Thank you, yet again, for the nudge. I’m just back from an hour long walk with my dog in the local bush. So beautiful. Like you I slow down and try to unplug. The longer the walk, the more likely my success.

Like you Linda, I find my voice in nature. That is the place where I slow down, listen to my inner voice and clarity comes to me. I wish you were closer too and could join us at the Artist’s Way Retreat:)

Finding my voice is an ongoing process. I’m amazed at times how different it is now in my 60s than when I was in my, say, 30s. Yet, it is also very much the same, an essence there that doesn’t change. It’s always been in nature that I’ve heard most clearly. An Artist Way retreat sounds great. Wish I was closer.

Heather, I agree that listening to our inner wisdom is not always easy especially with all the busyness around us. It’s one of the reasons I still do Morning Pages after 15 years. They are a form of meditation and I am still and quiet for 15-25 minutes every day while I do my pages.

Nancy, I have had a similar experience of discovering and trusting and honoring my heart through silence, and I completely agree that so much of our wisdom lives within us … if only we will be still an listen. It’s a profoundly simple, yet difficult practice (if that makes sense). Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Hi Nancy,

I feel the same as you about the silence of nature being my teacher. For me, it is my church.
