butterflyThis is a blog post I shared in May and I have added three new 7-line poems for you to enjoy. Here is a creative exercise I learned at a recent women’s retreat. It’s called the 7 – line poem and this is how it works: start with 2 words such as inspiration is & then use the last word in the sentence as the first word in the next line. These are stream of consciousness, short & sweet. Here is an example from my Morning Pages today: 1 – Inspiration is my driver. 2 – Driver of creativity. 3 – Creativity oozes from my pores. 4 – Pores drink in life. 5 – Life sustains. 6 –Sustains and feeds. 7 – Feeds my body, mind and spirit. Here’s another one: 1 – I share my creativity freely.  2 – Freely and openly. 3 – Openly and humbly. 4 – Humbly sharing my creativity. 5 – Creativity feeds my soul. 6 – Soul knows all. 7 – All is well. And one more: 1 – Art is fun. 2 – Fun and messy. 3 – Messy and creative. 4 – Creative and introspective. 5 – Introspective and imaginative. 6 – Imaginative and free flowing. 7 – Flowing from my core.

What I like about this simple exercise is that the words flow easily and effortlessly. Sometimes the poems contain a message for me. These little gems are full of wisdom and direction. I pay attention to the messages, I listen and I take them to heart. What is the Universe trying to tell me? What do I need to pay attention to today? Try this simple yet profound exercise, it’s really fun!

I had forgotten this exercise. I don’t think of it as a poem (I’m quite particular about what merits that descriptor), but it does produce some lovely prose that I find taps into the subconscious in a profound way. Maybe next time you could list a bunch of two word prompts to help us all get started playing and learning!

What a fun accessible little exercise! I can see how treasures can pop up. I’m thinking this could be a useful way to start a daily check in as a journal prompt. I’ll be giving it a try.
