monarch butterflyAs I read today’s entry in Daily Word on Purpose, this question popped up for me, What is my purpose? Have you ever asked yourself this very same question? The following words in the reading really spoke to me, “Who am I here to be? What is mine to do? When I seek greater awareness of my purpose, I turn within. I recall my values and passions.” I am passionate about helping and inspiring women to achieve their dreams, live a purposeful life, step into their power and live with courage. I am a life coach and I design and facilitate retreats for women, this is what I am called to do.

A question that comes up in my Morning Pages often is, How can I be of service today? I don’t know about you, but I can get so wrapped up in my own life and challenges that I forget about reaching out to others. One of the best things I can do is to get out of my small, limited mind and think of others and how I can serve them. Being of service doesn’t necessarily have to be traveling to a third world country to build a home for a Guatemalan family as I did in the late 1990’s. It can be as simple as opening a door for someone, smiling at the people I meet on my daily walks, asking the barista at the coffee shop how his/her day is going.

What about you? What is yours to do? How can you be of service today? What are you passionate about? What are your core values? How can you brighten someone’s day today? Please share your thoughts with me, I love to hear from you!

Guess I would answer the ‘what is my purpose’ question with ‘to be of service to others in a way that matters to them’. I have learned to end my connection coffee dates with others by asking them how I may be of service to them and I get some really different responses. It’s so fun and fulfilling for me to follow through for them.

Thanks for your comments Naomi! We never know how a smile or kind word will impact someone’s day. It could be just the lift they need to shift their energy.
Are you familiar with feng shui? That’s all about our physical space and how decluttering can shift the energy in our space. There’s more to it than that and you may want to check it out. Carole Hyder has a business that’s all about feng shui. Her website is carolehyder.com

I heard somewhere, probably via Oprah, that being who we naturally already are is enough. Just smiling at the person passing on a walk or at the grocery store can fill someone else’s heart. Even just filling your space with positive energy makes a difference. Do you think that’s true?

I’ve often thought about my purpose. Sometimes I get wrapped up in my purpose being a big PLAN or something, but as I get older I wonder if it is more subtle than that – being kind and doing my best to live in a way that I would feel proud for others to adopt.

Thank you for your comments Kimberly. I like what you said about volunteering being about love of people. You are so right. When I do service work, often I receive more than I give.

Dear Nancy, thank you for your thoughtful post. Today, and yesterday for that matter, I am volunteering at our recycled art project art show. My friend Jan is the recycling committee chair on the non-profit I am on the board of. And I am chair of the children’s art center. Because of our friendship, our ‘volunteering’ is play for us. I forget that community isn’t about have-tos if the concentration is simply on the love of people. Thanks for this. YOu’ve assisted my day.

Thank you for your comments Nanette! As to your question, is being of service enough? I believe that each one of us has to look inside ourselves to answer that question. Here’s another question for us to ponder. How much am I willing to give in terms of time, money and creative ideas?

Thanks for your thoughtful comments Palma! I agree that the world is a much richer place when we treat others as we would like to be treated. Also, by asking myself how I can be of service each day, it forces me to think about giving and not just receiving.

I so agree with you Deborah about holding the question “What is my purpose?” lightly. We are all works in progress evolving and changing every day. Holding my purpose lightly allows me to re-examine it, expand it and let it gently unfold. I like what you said about treating others with loving kindness as well as ourselves. Thanks for your comments!

I like holding the question “what is my purpose” lightly. I think it continues to unfold for us throughout our life and we should be ready to examine it always, but I’ve also seen people grasp on so tightly to what they’ve decided is their purpose that they stop expanding, stop evolving, stop welcoming the new. I think we’re all here to ground as much of the light we carry as we can in every moment; to promote unity; and to treat all beings including ourselves with loving-kindness. And within that framework I have lots and lots of room for both self-expression and opportunity to be of service.

Short and simple, loved it! I our purpose is to serve others, to contribute to the bigger picture. I think most people forget that and think they are here for themselves and their immediates only. Life is so much richer and a happier place when we all give – a smile, a greeting, some help, some time and yes, money when you have it to give.

Nicely thought out and written! You’ve certainly inspired me and helped me to achieve some of my dreams. But even more importantly, you’re my friend! And I like the part about thinking of ways to be of service to others as we go about our daily lives. I strive to leave others happy, cheerful or smiling after I interact with them. That’s not always possible, of course, but it’s a good goal.

I ask myself that purpose question all the time, Nancy. Your service suggestion is a great answer. Is that enough?
