Ana & new bikeWhat does it feel like to be a beginner? Being a beginner can feel exciting, exhilarating, expansive, humbling, joyful, challenging and downright scary. In her bestselling book, The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron has this to say about being a beginner, ” The grace to be a beginner is always the best prayer for an artist. The beginner’s humility and openness lead to exploration. Exploration leads to accomplishment.  All of it begins at the beginning, with the first small and scary step.” There is a willingness which needs to be present if we are to begin something new. SARK says “Beginnings are brand new chances. We can have as many beginnings as we need. Beginnings are fragile and resilient. When we begin, we are often tentative, uncertain. The beginning has its own power and energy. Let the buoyancy of the beginning carry you to new places!” How exciting! I came across the following bit of wisdom many years ago and unfortunately don’t know who to credit for it. It’s a favorite of mine and I use it both with my coaching clients and in my Artist’s Way classes. Here it is.

BEGIN AGAIN

One of the best things we can do in our lives is this: Begin again.

Begin to remember what worked for you and what worked against you,  and try to capture that magic again.

Begin to remember how natural it was when you were a child to live a lifetime each day.

Begin to forget the baggage you have carried for years; the problems that don’t matter anymore, the tears that cried themselves away on the shore of tomorrow’s new beginning.

Tomorrow tells us it well be here every new day of our lives; and if we will be wise, we will turn away from the problems of the past, and give the future and ourselves a chance to become the best of friends.

Sometimes all it takes is a wish in the heart to let yourself Begin again.

“Each day is a succulent new beginning.” -SARK

What about you? When will you begin something new? What new beginning is calling to you? How can you allow yourself to travel with your beginning wherever it may lead you? What first small, scary step can you take today in service of a new beginning? What is available to you when you stand in the beginner place?

I invite you to schedule a complimentary coaching session today. Begin whatever is calling to you! Begin where you are! Begin now!

I always think of tarot’s Fool as a perfect archetype of beginner. Innocence and willingness to move forward without guarantees or promises or even speculations about what lies ahead. Just because the path beckons, curiosity calls, the heart leads. It’s a beautiful state to be in and a lovely one to invite yourself into. I’m beginning a practice of non-dominant-hand drawings and I’m quite excited to see how it unfolds.
