Little EngineHave you ever heard of the children’s book “The Little Engine That Could?”  The little blue engine has a mantra she uses when chugging up the mountain pulling the train loaded  with toys for the children. She says “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.” And it worked! The little blue engine made it to the top of the mountain and down into the valley where the city was. All the little boys and girls were delighted because the little engine had delivered their toys.

I have adapted this mantra to “I know I can. I know I can. I know I can” and I use it whenever I am facing a challenge. It can be a physical challenge like climbing the hills back up to my home after I’ve hiked down to the river. It’s about 1.5 miles each way and on a humid day like today, it was tough coming back. I used my mantra and I made it. Not only did I climb the hills, I climbed at least 500 stairs as well. There is something powerful and affirming about chanting “I know I can” over and over again that enables me to put forth my best effort and succeed. This mantra works well for any type of challenge you are facing, physical, emotional, spiritual. Try it and see what  a difference it makes. It works for me every time!!

What about you? What is the biggest challenge you are facing today? Do you have a difficult person in your life? If yes, try this mantra when you approach them and see if it doesn’t make a big difference. “I know I can!” Please share your success stories with me! You know I love to hear from you:)

One of my earliest memories is watching a movie on tv about this little engine chugging ever so slowly up the hill. My particular mantra is “I can do this. I can do this. I can do this.” Works especially well on mornings when I’ve not slept very well. Positive thinking is so very powerful, isn’t it?

I’ve been playing with this one for a long time and find it works splendidly. Thanks for the reminder. I must have something today that will call for it.

yes, this is a great mantra – and I use it often. I’m trying to get back in the swing of things after being a caregiver to my mom. I’m re-taking all the coaching classes I took last year and trying to start from scratch. I know I can do this – I need to also remember it is all little steps, one at a time – and I’ll get there.

Oh good for you Nancy – I’m very impressed with your climbing, and your mantra! I have a great fondness for The Little Engine That Could – it was one of my brother’s favorites. I’m not sure I could chant your mantra without moving my arms like wheels of a train. 🙂

Today’s challenge for me is clearing off a number of things on my must-do list. I know I can, I know I can, I know I can…
