A quote from our late and beloved Maya Angelou goes like this: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude about it.” It’s not so much what happens to us, it’s how we respond to the situation or event. We all encounter obstacles, roadblocks, challenges. We can be like the rapids finding a way around the boulders or we can get hung up on the rocks. Do you view the world from the glass is half full or the glass is half empty perspective.? It’s all about our attitude. What I have learned is that I have the power to change my attitude about someone or something. I can choose another perspective. I can choose to look at a situation differently. My attitude can set the tone for my day. One of the reasons I value morning pages so much is because they can change my attitude. If I wake up in a grumpy, crabby place, after 3 pages of stream of consciousness writing, my mood has shifted, my attitude has changed. Morning pages help me to detach from my inner critic, the one with the negative voice. There is a shift in attitude from Negative Nelly to Positive Polly. We can’t change other people or situations but we can change our attitude and attitude is everything.
