yellow birdsMany of you know that I teach the Artist’s Way classes. Two weeks ago I heard the phrase “Place yourself well” from one of the women in the class. She explained that when she was a young woman of 18 or 19 and leaving home for the first time, her mother shared these words of wisdom with her. Her mother told her to place herself among people who are honorable,  people who are positive, open-minded, people who make a difference in the world. “Place yourself among people you want to become like, place yourself well,” her mother said to her. These words resonated with me on a deeply, personal level. I intentionally seek out people who are positive, open minded, generous, honest, genuine and compassionate. I see the glass half full, not half empty. It is so much easier to be around like minded people, seekers who are on a journey looking to improve themselves and the world at large. Another clue to placing yourself well is to ask the question, is this relationship or job energy giving or energy draining?  Surround yourself with people who see opportunities and possibilities all around them. Seek out people who affirm, encourage and support you in your endeavors. Joseph Campbell wrote, “Follow your bliss and doors will open where there were no doors before.” In her best selling book, The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron says, “It is the inner commitment to be true to ourselves and follow our dreams that triggers the support of the universe.” Place yourself well among people you want to become like. This blog post is dedicated to Alice H.

What about you? What kind of people do you surround yourself with? Who supports you in following your dreams? Are you a glass half full or glass half empty type of person? Have you placed yourself well in your relationships, your career, your lifestyle?

Oh what fabulous life advise! And I can say without hesitation I do my level best to live my life that way – surrounded by treasures (which most definitely includes people!) I believe we’re all here to expand, to flourish, to be the best we can be being our true soul selves, and I want to make sure I’m planted in a fertile, life-supporting nutrient-rich environment. And I want that for everyone.

Thank you Nancy for spreading the positive advice my mother gave me. I do try to surround myself with honest people that I admire and respect.
